Why does Windows 10 deem these user-installed applications open for removal? What other software should you be concerned with?

Let’s take a look at the why’s and wherefore’s, and some of the programs Windows 10 might eviscerate during your next system update.

Why Are They Being Removed?

The big Windows 10 November update quickly became known for all the wrong reasons. Microsoft had envisaged this major system update tweaking, fixing, patching and more, while the reality is Microsoft once again shipped a bug-laden update to its users. More backpedaling, more apologies. And here I was thinking Microsoft was going to be consistently good, at least for a while.

Reports quickly came back concerning application removal. Following the update, a number of programs no longer functioned properly with Windows 10, with instances of crashes and BSODs documented throughout various forums. In accordance with the latest Microsoft Services Agreement, Microsoft has your blessing to remove any applications they deem as creating a security risk on your system. To rid Windows 10 of the supposedly troublesome application, your system will kindly have removed the active version of the program and handily filed it away in your burgeoning “Windows.old” folder.

This, in the name of security, seems reasonable, but the manner of delivery – or rather removal – has rightly ruffled some feathers.

Which Applications Have Been Removed?

Affected programs appear to be entirely software products, rather than say, gaming installations. There isn’t a truly comprehensive list of removed applications, but we are going to list some of the most commonly mentioned programs for you:

  • Speccy
  • CPU–Z
  • AMD Catalyst Control Centre
  • CCleaner
  • HWMonitor
  • 8GadgetPack (including gadgets)
  • Various SATA Drivers
  • SpyBot

Further issues relating to the Fall Update included removal of color calibration profiles, custom folder location resets, some quick actions being restored to default, and custom driver configurations removed without warning, causing some to have to completely reconfigure. As with the application removals, there appears to be no true rhyme or reason in which systems have been affected by the updates, only that the experiences have been largely corroborated around the web.

Reports aren’t quite as common as the system utilities removals described above, but could prove much more problematic, if your system is left vulnerable.

The antivirus removals stem from the same version issues affecting the other applications. If Windows deems your antivirus version to be an issue during the update, it will simply remove it, without warning, and replace it with its own antivirus package. How Have Windows 10 Users Taken It?

Predictably and understandably irritated, and I have read more than a few choice expletives while running through forums and message boards.

There are also a healthy number of people gentling poking irritated Windows 10 users, largely covering the “you should have expected this” and “you have agreed to this in the license agreement” angles. Is there truth in these statements?

The license agreement was designed to cover as many devices as possible, so some definitions are purposely loosely worded, but I think application removal without warning is an unexpected step too far. Similarly, hindsight is a truly wonderful thing.

Windows 10 Application Removal Roundup

Whatever the terms of the Microsoft Services Agreement, it is plainly wrong to remove user-installed software, especially those without any malicious intent. Microsoft appears to be once again working on the assumption that we would all find it easier, if they automated tasks such as this; the removal of end-user choice will not sit well with many.

But if we isolate the instances of a bad update experience versus the instances of positives, I’m sure one outweighs the other. We only hear so much regarding the bad experiences because they so heavily impact Windows Power Users, though I expect this issue may have traveled further afield.

I’m sure some users can commiserate with Microsoft. I’m sure more won’t. Removal of potentially malicious software is a righteous step to ensuring the security of the masses, but the final decision with software removal should realistically remain with the end-user, the system owner, the paying customer. Fortunately, you can simply reinstall affected applications; this doesn’t seem to be an issue — until the next update.

  1. No, i don't appretiate someone thinking for me and fcking up my setup.. Every single big update my soundcard drivers gets fcked up (because i'm stupid to use old working ones instead of brand new that introduces huge background noise) and uninstalling some of my go-to apps every single time.
    Seriously, fck you Msoft.

  2. VLC actually got removed. How on earth did that qualify as malicious? I can see some reason in outdated virus scanners, but not this.
The strangest thing is that it's not in the windows.old folder.
It also removed shortcuts to notepad++. I didn't install it in program files, maybe that's a factor as well. Notepad++ continued to work though. I always use my autohotkey shortcuts to open/activate applications. I won't miss the shortcuts, but still: don't touch my stuff.

I wonder if a shortcut is legally mine and Microsoft is therefore not acting in line with it's own user agreement. Since they promise the user files are safe. Shortcuts are files as well. Maybe this goes for more files, like settings in %appdata%. Or files saved in the application folders of the removed applications.. What is a user file according to Microsoft?

If they go bankrupt, they probably will flag windows as unwanted software (it's not updated anymore and therefore unsafe in the future). Uninstall worldwide!!

  3. My Tor browser and AVG got uninstalled . I thought I was hacked until reading this article which reassures that I'm not. The user should have freedom to choose which application we want and which we don't. We need new independent desktop OS which is more user friendly and better control of the privacy data.

    • I've been saying this for a while! I just discovered 12 of my apps have been uninstalled. I'm so totally sick of this company and I agree we need a big change. I've looked at Ubuntu but am not techy enough to do that and I've looked at AppleMac but that's pricey plus need to buy Windows OS as well as the software that enables it to run Windows on a Mac. And yet they feel free enough to install freakin' crap on my machine!! Hate them!

  4. Well I must have the latest update because reinstalling software that has been removed by Windows results in the application never starting. The choice to turn off virus protection is offered but turns itself back on when moving to another window. This is not only irritating but it is an insult to have Windows assume I really don't know what I want but they do. I will be getting used to Linux and making the switch. I bought my PC, the software inside of it too, and I pay for access to the web. I resent Windows for deciding for me what content will be on my PC. There is talk about censorship for individuals but there are many companies that have spent fortunes on software development only to find themselves out of business with the release of an update from Windows while individuals who purchased software are S.O.L. with their useless software. I guess Windows will decide who will stay in business and who won't. Developers need to design an alternative OS and shut these unethical and most likely illegal business practices down. I will be more than happy to switch operating systems.

    • YES!

  5. Thanks Microsoft ! Your update has removed ALL of my games and software, including and not limited to TSW2018 ! How is that an 'old, incompatible' program ? My computer and everything on it is mine, bought and paid for. None else has the right to decide what software i can have and what i can not have ( withing the bounds of law ) It will now take me days to reinstall and download all the missing programs. A definate case for going back to my windows 7. Seems that MS has given out W10, just so that they can take control of everyone`s devices. Glad i have not got one of those windows phones. Give us back the right to dicide what updates we do and do not want.

  6. I'm new to Win10 but long time user of Windows. Just did an update today and found that MS didn't like my installation of their Win7 games of Solitaire , Minesweeper and Chess. All were removed. Not a happy Windows user. Might consider going to Linux.

  7. Started happening on Windows 7 now also. Time to buy a Mac I guess.

I lost Gimp, Git, MySQL Workbench, TrueCrypt, HWMonitor and probably lots more that I haven't discovered yet.

  8. Not only does Microsoft remove software without a by-your-leave, it has started eating its own young! The last upgrade (MAY 2018) removed my copy of Office!!!

  9. Really this windows 10 have been uninstalling my pace license and today my avid pro tools 11 that really insane

  10. 3-22-18. Well the problem is most definitely not fixed. For the 2nd time in 3 weeks a Windows 10 update removed several necessary but non-malicious of my user installed programs including QuickBooks, Adobe, Google Chrome, Picassa, GoToMyPC, Transaction Pro. Stamps.com, as well as ALL of my networked printer drivers. I’ve now spent over 16 hours reinstalling (for the second time) these programs, lost 16 hours of work and can only assume it will happen again with the next update. Sure looks like a class action lawsuit should be in the works!

  11. Yeah the Jan 2018 update deleted all my mother's game apps like solitare and I've still havent heard the end of it. Thinking of suing microsoft for pain and suffering because of it.

  12. After the update to my windows 10 this totally removed C Cleaner +
Adobe Reader and added Audio Wizard, waht that does goodness only knows

No warning or suggestion this had happened, who the heck do they think they are???

  13. Windows 10 just uninstalled Firebird 1.5 which is an opensource database engine.
My client is dead in the water since it will not allow me to reinstall the application.
Microsoft should be punished for doing this. Does anyone know a work around.

  14. Wonderful! :-( It's stil happening now, in 2017, so even if Microsofy comes up with sporadic, half-hearted apologies, they clearly don't mean it. The orignal article is just as relevant as it was in 2015, when it was written. Sad!
I was dubious about the Win10 update but I thought I'd dip a toe in the water and I upgraded one laptop. OS upgrade is a major thing, so I was prepared for some problems and I got some too, but I sorted things out with a few workarounds. I thought I was set.
The lack of control with updates is frustrating but what I didn't expect was that MS would remove perfectly good and legitimate applications at a whim, WITHOUT WARNING OR PRESENTING ANY OPTIONS. They may say they are doing it for our own good but why do they do it without a warning and without options? I wasn't asked, nor I consented to the removal of my legitimately obtained applications (both free and paid for stuff). This is clearly unacceptable yet it's still seem to be happening. This is the Mt Everest of arrogance. I'm really surprised that MS is not subjected to the blow torch over this. I suppose, most people don't know any better and just happily 'baaa', while chewing crud and stand in the flock of general ignorance.
I remember waaay back when I used early versions of Excel and Word and I loved them and I loved Microsoft for them. MS may have gotten bigger but for consumers, everything went downhill from there. In fact, outside the brainwashed flock, there is so much resenment that many people are kept as customers only by force, by MS using their de facto market monopoly. This is not a good, stable, long term business plan.
The sneaky removal of programs is really the last straw for me. I may not be able to fully avoid using MS products, but I actively seek out and use alternatives where possible. I look after several PCs at home, help and advise friends and I'm in a responsible position in a tech company. Some of my actions are minor, like last week when our company was about to buy MS branded keyboards and mice and I changed the order for an alternative brand. A small thing but I just wish that more people did the same, so that Microsoft eventually would see the light and shake of the greedy, evil #@%*s they seem to be run by. Or wither up and die.

  15. 2 nights ago (9/25) windows ran a major update without my approval. It removed over 100 applications and associated drivers, etc. Mostly Protools and other music recording related software. This will take me at least 10 hours of work to reinstall and configure. Talked to MS and they will not answer my question of how and why did this happen. I am beyond frustrated and am seriously considering buying a Mac. How could they possibly believe that this is best for the user? It's a perfect case of a monopoly not caring and not providing any customer support whatsoever because they no people will continue to buy their software which increasingly takes control away from the user. Bad business, bad.

  16. i was going to move to windows 10 back when it was first coming out. i installed it and it removed one of my much used apps. i was flabbergasted! i mean really, who do they think they are!?
i am a windows user because i learned on windows and so am comfortable with the interface and all that. but microsoft seems to be doing everything they can to get me to finally switch over to linux permanently!!

  17. I lost Windows Media Player, now can't play DVDs, which is one of the reasons I bought this computer. I also lost Windows Movie Maker, which I used often. I don't understand how MS can delete these after the Windows 10 update. I paid for them when I bought the MS suite. In my mind, they stole them from me and now they want me to purchase them from the App store... please! I'm just waiting for the class action suit to be filed!

  18. Hi folks
I've just been subjected to a Windows 10 update marathon (5 July 2017). It took about an hour and afterwards I wanted to start work again - but couldn't. I'm a translator and have (or rather, HAD) about 10 electronic dictionaries installed on my second hard disk, along with a digital ebook reader and around 20 ebooks for reference. ALL GONE! Nearly everything that M'soft didn't like has just been wiped. Also a drawing program that I sometimes use (Serif DrawPlus) has just gone off drive C. This behaviour is outrageous (not to say possibly illegal). One might be tempted to ask why I bother with Microsoft. Unfortunately, the only program available for my highly specialised work is a Windows program. If it were available for Mac OS I'd drop Windows completely.

  19. I just installed Windows 10 (fresh) a week ago and was trying to reinstall all my old games. Some gave compatibility issues but I got them working eventually. Next update/restart and 3 were broken beyond repair. I couldn't remove or reinstall them and had to reinstall the whole system again. Affected games: Planescape Torment, Spore and Viva pinata. So tried again and disabled the windows updater in the services and created a few restore files. Then windows started running the repair app on startup and I lost a bunch of desktop game icons. Fearing this would also delete games I disabled that for the game disk, it broke my windows install.. Not even the restore files were available. So now I'm on my 3th install of W10 and am going to create an image file because this is getting tiresome. I'm wondering if the games broke because of compatibility issues or because I change the default install location..

  20. As of May 22 2016 the Folding At Home program from Stanford University has been deleted twice so far this month it's the from my windows 10 machine. This program usually runs 24/7 on this machine. and now it has un mounted one of my SSD's.

  21. You want to know what was deleted? Now I can not print from my AirPort as the software can not be reinstalled.

  22. I just found this past week, they removed my Dell Support Assistant and my McAafee, and my sound is all messed up, can only get it so loud and no louder. Used to be much louder, sometimes on the YouTube videos I can hardly hear them. Oh and they keep messing with my Google Chrome, makes me so mad my games do not support their Edge crap and they keep pushing it on me, I PAID for this computer, I should be able to use the programs I want....

  23. Does this count as non-competition tactics? You know, deleting competitor software and then trying to force the user to use your own competing software for a rental fee? They already ran into trouble for that before when trying to lock internet explorer and media player as the only option back in the day, and were forced to allow competing software to work on their system under definition of monopoly. Ironically, the only reason MS has been successful all these years has been because of compatibility and ease of writing software for the OS by any provider, rather than locking the OS development into a draconian store system and then deleting the competition.

  24. I'm bloody furious !!!!! IT Tech at a College & getting countless calls where apps have been removed without warning. Office 2010, Adobe CC Suite and our College Information Systems app suite to name but a few.

So much for 'All your files are exactly where you left them' THANKS A BUNCH MS !!!'
We're now in the process of rolling back to Win7 & re-installing apps.

  25. 12-10-16--Nice Mess. Wiped out Restore points, could not access System Restore--endless loop of Error box, Volume error. Wiped out Start menu X, cannot open 'system' or any repair function from stock menu, had to use Tweaking to re-register, many dlls missing=ERROR BOX and loops. Had to shut down with power button, had to re-engage system protection which is restore points, had to install Start menu 8 to access 'Computer' and 'system'. sfc from cmd only went to 51% and failed. Researched KB3201845 on google and MS for a day and found many others had problems. 20+restarts today to try all 'F' keys. Ridiculous. PC sabotaged after 'update',shutdown, and cold start 4 hrs later. Now burning ISO on another unit just in case....Yikes!!!

  26. My 2014 report builder towards 2008 R2 sql ssrs ,odbc connection stopped working after latest update.
Gets error ERROR [IM002] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] no default driver can be found.
    WTF is this?
I need this to work in our company due to still a lot ODBC connections.

  27. Cisco VPN client was removed this morning. And it was HELL to get there and working in the first place. Hours of work . so everytime I need to use the VPN I have to reinstall the client .

  28. Yep - happend to me today! Now I lost all my bussiness VPN softwares (can't install them back - must be at the office), LibreOffice (Does not reinstall!), Inkscape, Spotify, Notepad++ etc..

This is digital terrorism runed by Microsoft! Microsoft must be but on watchlist and threat like ISIS! WIndows 10 is worse than any Virus! This is the time to move safer operating systems than these binary blackholes - Linux Desktops will have a huge boost coming up!

YOU DONT TOUCH MY APPLICATIONS! IT'S MY JOB - NOT YOURS!

  29. My PC just received a MS System update (October 2016) which is causing problems with no notifications. The most recent critical one being that I can no longer use my Epson scanner V750 with Twain drivers. Luckily I was able to download drivers from the Epson website. Also lost my desired start menu (XP layout) as the MS Metro interface is a COMPLETE DOG and is totally unacceptable for ease of use. Way to much 'flash & trash' with each MS system upgrade.

  30. I lost:
    Teamviewer
    Citrix Program Neighbourhood
    Cisco VPN Client
All are used in our daily business

  31. I had Word removed as well as a database application that I use in my business

  32. The November update removed my drivers for my Dell Photo 926, including the Base System device and PCI Simple Communications Controller. It is an old printer, however; it always works well. So, I spent hours trying to make it work. Dell only offers a Czech language driver. I do not speak Czech, but managed to install the driver and after much fiddling around the printer is working. Frustrating waste of time! Echo '..the final decision should for software removal should remain with the end user'

  33. Sept 2016 ..overnight I have lost all my Outlook files from Office Professional 2010. The Excel and Word software is still there but ALL my important emails and more important my contacts lists have disappeared. I get an error message: BIG WHITE X IN RED CIRCLE Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. the set of folders cannot be opened. The file C:usersuserdocumentsOutlook Filesoutlook.pstcannot be found. Then when I press 'ok' I get a file explorer window showing the 'documents' folder and when I click on the Outlook file it's empty. I've searched my entire computer for pst files and they are ALL gone. I have no email program at all and none of my files are anywhere on my computer.

  34. I have lost lenovo thinkvantage access connections. Without this I cannot turn off my bluetooth with fn f5. It is very annoying because I can't remember which version I had installed. The windows bluetooth in settings cannot turn off the lenovo bluetooth. Microsoft want shooting with a very large machine gun.

  35. TurboTax
    Canon printer drivers
    Savings Bond Wizard
    File Hippo

  36. Windows 10 installed itself on my computer without my knowledge. I uninstalled it after not being able to understand where everything went. It uninstalled my emails and office and won't let me reinstall them even though I have the disc. It tells me my computer dose not support it. So now what do I do.

    • Hi Phyllis.
Two words: That. Sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. Just a few questions:
      - When you said 'I uninstalled it..' did you mean that you reverted back to windows 7 ? How did you do this?

      - And by '.it uninstalled my emails and office.' did you mean your Outlook email and Micorsoft Office programs?

      - Does the message that tells you your 'computer does not support it' have somekind of number or 'error code' written anywhere?

-And finally, is the disc you were trying to use for Microsoft Office?

Hopefully I can give some advice if you still need it of course!

  37. Muvee software quit unable to make a dvd that will play in a vcr , Muvee engineers have been trying to resolve it since the first of June with no luck yet.
Lost all map apps that I had , ones that are on there now comes up with half page will not give directions
THIS WAS A MAJOR SCREWING OVER BY THIS UPGRADE WORST PART I AM STUCK WITH IT .

  38. where there is a portable alternative like sumatra pdf reader i use it. it cannot be uninstalled if not installed before

  39. w10 secretly removed my AMD Catalyst Control Centre, i felt so scared its just like terminator age is coming, computer start ruling human life..run

  40. It removed all of my software including my financial software but it did offer to 'rent' me a copy of office 360 for a monthly fee to access my spreadsheets, financial information and documents. I don't like being forced to use software I don't need when I already purchased it. I 'upgraded' to my original windows 7.

  41. I have just upgraded to Windows 10. It removed SpyBOT. I reinstalled SpyBOT. It removed it AGAIN upon next boot of my PC.

I am furious furious furious furious furious furious .. incensed incensed incensed incensed.
This is my system mine mine mine mine mine mine mine .. MINE.

I therefore want to know how to disable this behavior. Waiting for MS to deign to provide a revision to their logic that favors one or two particular apps .. I want to know how to edit the registry and STOP this Windows 10 component.

Does anyone know how to do this?

    • The same wretched plight hath made us kin, my friend :(

  42. I've lost the whole Office 2010 Suite, AVG, Malware Bytes, Windows Movie Maker, VLC Player and Windows Media Player. These are essential software for my job as a media teacher. I now have to install them every Friday after Windows 10 deletes them every Thursday evening during 'clean up'.

  43. I lost AVG back in November. I reinstalled without a problem, but it was annoying. Yesterday (Sunday 12th June 2016) I lost:

    Phase Express
    Foxit Reader
    Folder Size
    Fractal Mapper
Fractal world - - all of these I successfully re-installed.

However, I also lost Adobe Photoshop Elements - and I could not re-install it from the disc I have. That was very annoying.

  44. I lost Speccy all together and I just realized that my Virtual Box app no longer runs even if I run as admin.. seriously considering Linux for a full time solution. I have a nice system with in Ivy bridge I7 quad at 3.4 Ghz with 16 GIGs of RAM. My mouse is constantly failing after trying every solution I can find online and even a second mouse I still have not been able to resolve this issue. I contacted Dell in a support chat and the reply was as follows,

Agent : 'Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product. If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected.'

Agent : 'Dell predicts a life of any XPS system to be 3 years and since technology is upgrading too fast, system require change in every 3-5 years'

It seems to me that major PC manufacturers WANT software failure/upgrades so they can continue to generate business..

So if car makers did this we would all have to buy a new car every 3-5 years because the old one would simply fail to function???

  45. Speccy keeps geting remove, .. I just keep an install file in the Downloads folder and reinstall it each time

  46. Once again, Microsoft know better. I am just sick and tired of the machinations of the operating system which keeps on re-installing a faulty driver, yet removes a very handy utility WITHOUT WARNING OR PERMISSION. Just who is in charge here? I do think MS would be better occupied in providing a stable, fully working operating system rather than coming up with modifications of a truly facile nature. I'm afraid I have had enough with Windows 10 and am going to re-install a copy of 7.

  47. I lost a ton of stuff.. I would never have updated to windows 10 if I had know it would delete all my programs. Most I had purchased. I am a web designer so I had a lot of different programs for custom sites. This is just a partial list.

    • Did you make a claim against Microsoft? I too lost many programs and they did not say program removal was a risk - just no data or files will be lost. Not removal of entire programs like Quickbooks which hardly a security risk program. Microsoft should pay for replacement disks for all of these programs.

  48. The time is off by 6 hours.

In 3 months of fiddling I can not get the clock on windows 10 to show the right time consistently.

  49. update deleted my GOG game. turned on my pc after an updated to a missing short cut and program x86 folder gone...poof thanks microsoft making my life easier.

  50. Just installed 1511 today without thinking, Windows says 'Shutdown and Update' and. well, lost a bunch of applications. Glorious, glorious Microsoft! I always thought Apple liked to impose a will but this is worse!

  51. Ive heard so many horror story's now I am just glad I have not upgraded or downgraded by the sound of it.

I have AMD Catalyst Control Centre on my computer. I have also been told my printer/scanner will no longer work if I upgrade.

So I am staying with windows 7pro until I really do need to upgrade. Thats if microsoft do not automatically install windows 10 on my PC. They keep trying each time a new update for windows7 is available.

Ill link back to your article from my site

  52. Removed my Vipre virus protection that is for the lifetime of my p.c. Not once but twice..I've been able to reinstall it. Also the apps stop working..Netflix and Gmail so far.

  53. '..simply reinstall affected applications..'

    Are you kidding me?

My dad upgraded and after 2 uneventful days it removed just about EVERY PROGRAM' on his computer. Every single Office application, Picassa and every other photo app he owns, all the settings, all the time spent cataloging, all the many, many hours it will take to rebuild his system.

I'm staying far away from Windows 10 for at least another year.

Windows needs to come up with a way to restore all these old files.

    • Only a year? You seem to have learned nothing.

I run windows 7 in a Virtual Box (inside of a a Linux install) when I must use Windows
and since all updates are turned off Micro-Shite can not touch it.

  54. Killed my wife's Craft Artist V1.0 scrap booking program on her laptop. Wouldn't reinstall either.

  55. Antivirus only avast will run , Intel Security-McAfee no go , Kaspersky no go did all I can to get it to work stop mic free spyware scaner but no luck ?

  56. hello. I installed ArcGIS v-9.3 from ESRI website. But this version did,nt run on my windows 10, so i uninstall it from controll panel and delete its each n every file to Install ArcGIS v10.1 , but when i start installing new version, an error 'please first uninstall your previous version to install new version of ArcGIS' is occuring every time. Now i found the assembly files of ArcGIS 9.3. i am trying to unistall them but still an error is occuring 'Access is denied'. pls suggest me a better solution to uninstall or fully remove these assembly files from my system. pls. as soon as possible.

  57. I spent a significant amount of time installing Windows Media Center on my PC running Windows 10. It was running great, but then came this November update. It was uninstalled! All my default program settings were changed too; e.g., I had to set Firefox up as my default browser again. Very disappointing!

  58. I have 2 problems. Updates makes things not working. how to uninstall all the crappy software they want me to use. I expect the filesystem to be crap since it is ntfs but you have to defragment often and also use programs to trim the system. A Windows 10 lite and the possibility to use better filesystems like ext4, Reiser fs etc would make it a lot better. The new µ$ philosophy is buy it, use it love it . I don´t want their stupid apps or browsers. I never use Bing. Google, Duck duck go, Ask, Yandex, Wolphram Alfa, and even Yaahoo works better.

  59. So if I had Speccy and CCleaner installed on my Windows 10 desktop and they were removed, what is stopping me from reinstalling them?

  60. It removed CCleaner. >:[ Also Sony Sound Forge (paid-for, registered, worked fine) would not work again until I read the compatibility troubleshooter.

  61. This OS removed my CPU-Z too.

    How bizarre.

It better not remove my Avira antivirus I'm going to install soon once this pre-loaded McAfee on this Win10 laptop expires.

  62. It's removed office win zip Adobe iTunes what's going on

    • Microsoft thinks it knows what's best for your system. If you disagree with them, you can always go back to 7 or 8, maybe even try a different ecosystem altogether.

  63. Why anyone would upgrade to Windows 10 is beyond me. I'd rather switch to a new operating system than upgrade. Windows 10 is spyware disguised as an operating system. Everyone upgrading should get their heads checked.

  64. You guys should try out the Zorin OS 10 it's a lot better then MS Windows 10

  65. With a Windows 7 system protected against Microsoft I'm persuaded to wait for Windows 12 before looking up again.

  66. I can't say I've ever had a Linux o/s remove software from my system. Just an observation.

  67. I think it's just random glitch. I have avast, cpu-Z, ccleaner, and sumatraPDF installed on my windows 10 laptop, and after the november update not one of them was missing.
Even some of the custom drivers (like touchpad and flip controls - I have an Asus transformer) prompted to automatically install themselves.

  68. This Conversation Is Not Different From Those On Lots Of Other Forums.

  69. The November Update did 3 things to my PC:

    1. It removed all the sound, camera, and printer drivers and forced a complete re-install of all three. The Camera driver will not re-install to this day though.

    2. It enabled 'Fast Boot' which, ironically, cause the boot process to go from the pre-update 18 seconds to the post-update 4 minutes 32 seconds. I found how to disable it via the Microsoft Forums.

    3. It slowed the cooling fans inside my laptop so I have to be wary of my PC temperature and shut down every 2 hours or so to let it cool off.

  70. I lost wifi on my laptop, the drive don't work Microsoft don't have the right to say what we can or cannot used..feel like it 1996 everybody trying to take control of the programming of the Internet,....

  71. I lost at least CC Cleaner, and maybe more. I'm checking. I thought that was very presumptious of Micorsoft and considered going back a version. We all have to get it sooner or later though, unless we switch to Apple. Which I don't want to do. Geez!!!!!! I feel like I've been bullied.

  72. I think the issue was there were several programs that needed to be updated for Windows 10 to recognize them - never had an issue with CCleaner or Foxit Reader, Speccy wasn't updated from January 2015 (new release came out in December - after the Fall update..) New drivers for Windows 10 for AMD Catalyst software (as well as many other programs) came out after Windows 10 was released - if you were running Windows 7 or 8.1 it's likely that new drivers might've come out for your hardware.

  73. As someone who was comfortable with building computers, flipping DIP switches, and making software work before Plug and Play was even a thing, it's hard for me to get teary-eyed over these inconveniences. But I will say that it wouldn't have been a big deal to throw in some code that would present the user with a list on the very first boot after upgrading, of every application that didn't make the cut, so at least you wouldn't be scrambling all over trying to figure out exactly what was gone.

That said, I've had a genuinely good time with the upgrades on three of my computers and one for my dad. No earth-crushing disasters at all, just normal problems that I think this first-world society get too squirmy about. Every PC I own from here on will have Windows 10 on it, because as great as Windows 7 was for me, this is wayyyy better.

  74. Ju, couldn't have said it better!!!

  75. Win10 uninstalls AV because acting like a Virus doesn't want an AV around.
PS. Just bought a Win7 license for my new PC

  76. Nonsense TBH. I use CCleaner, Sumatra PDF, & AMD CCC, and none of them was uninstalled when I updated all 3 of my PCs.

That said, there are some antivirus programs that were uninstalled by preview builds due to compatibility errors.

    • What do you mean, 'nonsense'? User experience has varied with these, but I can personally testify to the fact that both CCleaner and Foxit Reader were uninstalled from my system by the November Update. Just because it didn't happen to you does not mean it's a fairy tale that other people made up.

  77. Why do I think this article is just simply too late.

  78. It is now a weekly occurrence that I see an article that makes me happy that I did not upgrade from Win 7.

Even with sticking with Win 7 I still have to be careful about what upgrades I allow, the number in my do not allow list is 11 and seems to climb every month.

I have been an MS user since back in the DOS days but unless by some miracle MS stops the mandatory updates I will probably be moving to Linux when Win 7 becomes unsupported.

  79. This is exactly why the windows update service remains disabled on my computer at all times. Only after an update is released and I've had a few weeks to read about it, will I allow the computer to update. MS can't force updates if the service required to get and install them is disabled.

It's a shame too because I really like W10 after the viruses, malware, bloat, etc. (Cortana, telemetry, built-in apps) are cut completely out of it (not just turned off). :)

    • You are an ignorant idiot.

  80. Forget about windows 10 for a moment, the past December 8th updates on my Win 7 laptop (9 in total) crippled a few of my drivers, saying they were a security risk and the certificates couldn't be verified. Two were Intel drivers downloaded from HP. Wouldn't even let me reinstall them. Had to do a system restore (twice) to November. Ran an SFC scan and also there were files that were corrupted. The scan fortunately fixed then.
This whole experience since Win 10 came out has been a nightmare. Twice I upgraded an had massive problems. Went back to 7 and still have problems.
Who the hell is in charge at that company? has anyone had similar issues?

    • The December 8 updates were the one's that trashed my laptop. I still haven't figured out everything that was done, but I know I am very frustrated at whatever happened to my Chrome Browser. I get security certificate expired notifications at every site I go to. Thank god for Firefox!

  81. What am I supposed to use instead of the very light Foxit Reader and Sumatra Reader? Adobe Acrobat Reader???? I would need another hard disk for that (and another connection to download the hourly Adobe updates).
Options: 1- block Windows updates at the firewall level (is that possible or Windows Firewall itself won't allow it?) 2- Ubuntu

  82. Good experience with an old ASUS desktop, Surface 3, and a Surface Pro 3. Only real issues were with some preview builds. I am a Windows 10 fan so far. Strongly thinking about ditching my android to for a windows phone. I know android does the same thing when an update comes out that it views as incompatible; seems like a no brainer. The anti-virus thing makes sense too. My anti-virus software was unaffected in all three systems during each update; even preview builds.

  83. I'm running Windows 10 on three devices and have no major complaints. People will always complain.. Windows RT locked users into verified apps from the app store. Windows 10 gives you access to the app store, but also lets you load other apps. Regardless, people want a system that runs and doesn't crash.. Locking users into verified apps only makes sense to that end.. having the OS remove or quarantine software that is causing problems delivers upon the demand when loaded software hasn't been verified. People always have something to complain about. Windows 10 is the best OS Microsoft has released.. easily.

  84. My experience with Windows 10 was so bad I reformatted my drive and re-installed Windows 7. Every time it updated it was worse. Files disappeared, drivers disappeared and it completely wiped out my main user account to the point I could not access my own files unless I created another user account. AND then things were missing. After nothing but snarky and ridiculous suggestions that did not work from Microsoft and their Forums I pulled the plug. And I thought Vista sucked ! VERY disappointed in the Product and the non-exsistent Customer Service.

  85. Which is why I'm staying with Windows 8.1. Thank You Microsoft.

  86. This is misguided. Windows did not remove anything; it was simply unable to migrate the existing software to the new version. When Windows upgrades, first the new clean version is installed, then files and apps are copied over to the new version, and then the old one is gotten rid of. Some drivers and apps can be incompatible and hence did not make it.

As for the expired antivirus software, that's completely reasonable because having it installed is a major risk to security. It won't update and Windows Defender is disabled in its presence. Only one antivirus can be enabled at one particular time; so the free, up-to-date Defender is much better than an expired 3rd party one.

  87. I must admit I am so glad that I followed various people's advice and waited before upgrading from 7 to 10. The more I hear the less I am likely to upgrade and if micro$oft are going to keep messing with people's choices and preferences and future upgrade is like to be away from their systems - even if I do have to learn some Linux!

    • You might be surprised by how user friendly some Linux distros are. Mint is a good starting point, IMO.

  88. This is exactly why I left Micro$oft and went to Apple. OS X never does this crap. Good luck.

  89. My enthusiasm for upgrading from my current Win 7 to Win 10 has fallen dramatically from enthusiastic to downright wary. Even 'free' doesn't attract my attention anymore.

I am sticking with Win 7, thanks.

    • +1

  90. CCleaner and ClassicShell were both removed,
but most other installed software did remain.

  91. It removed most of my apps that I had installed from the Microsoft Store as well as made changes in Google Chrome that I have yet to be able to figure out and fix. It virtually disabled Chrome since every site comes back with a bad certificate.

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

As you have mentioned you are not able to install Flight Simulator game on your computer.

The issue could be caused if the installation disk of Flight Simulator X Gold Edition is corrupted or not working.

1. Did you check the game CD’s with different computer?

Fsx Install Removing Applications

2. Have you made any recent hardware or software changes to your computer prior to the issue?

3. What is the make and model of the computer?

You can also try inserting the installation disk of Flight Simulator X Gold Edition into a different computer and check if you are able to install.

This issue can cause due to software conflicts, or if the installation disc is not clean.

To clean the disc, use a disc-cleaning kit. Or, gently wipe the silver side of the disc by using a soft, lint-free cotton cloth. Do not use paper cloth that can scratch the plastic and can leave streaks. When you clean the disc, wipe from the center of the disc outward. Do not use a circular motion. If the problem continues to occur, clean the disc by using a damp cloth or a commercial CD or DVD cleaning solution. Dancing drums slot download.
